🇦🇺 WE’RE BACK FROM CANBERRA!

What an incredible few days at Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia – FECCA National Conference 2026, meeting people from across Australia who are working to shape our multicultural future!

And what a significant conference it was! For the first time in 26 years, a sitting Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, addressed FECCA.

Our Chair attended the conference, where Dr Shawn Michael O’Donnell presented their co-authored research, Beyond Cultural Difference: Poverty, Trust and Belonging Across Marginalised Communities in Four Countries.

We came away with plenty to think about.

– Why are migrants blamed for Australia’s problems while their contributions and qualifications are so often overlooked?

– Why do we focus on attracting migrants to regional Australia without doing enough to make them want to stay?

– How do we better protect migrant women facing family violence, language barriers and isolation?

– How do we ensure that children learning English don’t fall behind at school?

– And importantly, how do we build a multicultural Australia that genuinely acknowledges and respects First Nations peoples?

These are not just conference discussions. They are issues we encounter through our community work, including our “We Listen and We Don’t Judge” program.

We returned to South Australia with new connections, ideas and an even stronger determination to make our communities more welcoming, safe and inclusive.

Because belonging is about much more than celebrating different cultures. It’s about how we treat one another. ❤️
