The presentations traced different waves of Tatar migration to Australia- from the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union, through post-war Europe; from communities that had moved into China, including Xinjiang, and later migrated directly or via Turkey; and, more recently, from Tatarstan and other parts of the former Soviet world.

It was especially interesting to hear Roostam Sadri, author of Genocide Under the Red Sun, speak about this history. It was fascinating to hear these stories from someone who has documented both family experience and broader community history. And just as much it was quite fascinating to learn that Sadri contributed the Tatars entry to The Australian People, helping ensure this history is part of Australia’s documented multicultural story.

Another detail that stayed with the audience was the story of Abdul Ganivahoff, one of the earliest recorded Tatars in Australia, who arrived in Melbourne in 1916 and later died on the Western Front.

Beyond the history, we were deeply impressed by the community’s warmth, hospitality, determination and pride in preserving culture, language and connection across generations.

It was also wonderful to meet people from beyond South Australia, including Ümit Çapanoğlu from the American Turko-Tatar Association in the San Francisco Bay Area. Seeing those links across the wider diaspora was a powerful reminder of the value of collaboration.

A very warm thank you to Shohret Valiff, Director of the Tatar Bashkurt Association in Australia, and Dilara Valiff, South Australian Ambassador for Australian Tatar Kurultai the Australian Tatar Forum – Kurultai, for such a warm welcome- and to everyone involved in bringing this remarkable first Australian Kurultai together.

And yes- I absolutely loved my delegate gift bag full of cultural goodies. 😊

A fascinating day, and a privilege to be there.

Читайте на Facebook

Today, we had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Australian Tatar Forum- Kurultai in Adelaide.
